New Work

New Work. Well it has been four days so far and all seems well. I've done rather well at remembering people's names. Not a single major faux pas so far. I know where the bathroom is. A stapler is on order. People seem quite nice if a little melancholy. The building is new with glass walls that do not open. The lights adjust to how much sun is coming in (I think). There is a shower. There is a dishwasher. There is this hand-gel stuff to put on your hands instead of washing them. There are Tim Tams but you have to pay for them (sucky policy but probably best for long term health).

I haven't worked in an office for over a year so this is all rather odd. There are no beds. The fridge has none of my food it in and I haven't found a TV. However there are lots of really quiet people dressed a bit too smartly for my liking. They hover. They don't seem to eat. It could be a staging area for aliens. I've had lunch by myself for four days. Tomorrow I have confirmed lunch date though - yippee. I'm going to be a product manager. At the moment I'm just trying to absorb what the company and product does and how it works. It seems rather clever but needs a lot of work. It needs a big GUI re-hash which should be fun - how sad am I. Like all business software it is rather boring stuff but internally it is quite elegant. I have an induction and training week soon and then am off to the States to meet the US sales team for a week. The commute is a bit long but the iPod helps and once I manage to work out where the ferry stop is I should be able to do the whole thing by boat.

I'm quite happy to be back at work and quite sad to see much less of the kids.
